Sydette Harry: “So Do You Want To Fight or Nah?”—Identity Rage, Performance, and the Shaky Ground Keynote

CW: Sexism, racism, trauma and corresponding discussion of lived experiences

  1. This is a livetweet from Affect Conf 2017, Day 1.
  2. For more information about this talk and others, check out my full Day 1 writeup on Medium.
  3. Started with a fab dramatic performance. Love the multimedia approach; seems very appropriate for a talk on coping, performance & identity
  4. Talks about a lot of emotional labor done trying to figure out which identity is causing you to be marginalized in a specific circumstance.
  5. Speech as a performance or "speech act" when it creates a material change. Both confirmations of marriage and deportation are performative.
  6. Um, look up Saint Thomas the Builder and the time he built a king a castle in the kingdom of heaven.
  7. Anyway: consider what is going to be at the end of this fight. Consider the audience in that context.
  8. Discussing how identity is cobbled together from performance.
  9. We replicate toxic social structures in our groups. Example: "We're all into resistance, but don't punch a nazi."
  10. Things going great until the black woman asks, "What about me? How am I being protected?" Folks start umming and ahhing & don't have answers
  11. How you get through is how you get through. It's different for everybody and it's important.
